The sound in front and the sound beside it
Making a vocal clear does not mean sharpening every consonant. One breath heard right beside it and one pad moved back can let the vocal come forward by itself.
In a mix, distance is not decoration. It is the structure that decides where the listener stands inside the song.
Leave space so the material can appear
When a sound does not feel rich enough, it is easy to look for another layer. Sometimes what is needed is not another sound, but moving one that is already there one step back.
